Two rooms with identical square footage can have different perimeters. A long narrow room usually needs more trim than a square room of equal area.

Measure each wall

For a simple rectangle, perimeter = 2 × (length + width). A 14 × 11 ft room has 2 × 25 = 50 linear feet of wall. Measure the width of door openings where no trim will be installed. Suppose one doorway is 3 ft wide: the net trim length is 47 ft.

Add cutting allowance

Outside corners, inside corners, splices and imperfect cuts consume material. If you use 10% as an illustrative allowance, 47 × 1.10 = 51.7 ft. Check whether unusually long runs, returns or custom corners make that allowance insufficient.

Count stock boards

If the store sells 8 ft boards, 51.7 ÷ 8 = 6.4625, so seven boards represent the mathematical minimum. But seven boards only supply 56 total feet; if one wall requires long continuous sections, some short offcuts cannot be joined invisibly. Plan the actual cutting lengths before placing the order.

Door openings and unusual rooms

Do not subtract a door opening that receives a threshold or trim detail requiring material. For an L-shaped room, measure the actual walls rather than using the perimeter of a surrounding rectangle. Also check whether cabinetry, built-ins or stairs interrupt a run.

Try the calculator

Enter room size, door widths, stock board length and an allowance into the Baseboard Calculator. Bring the estimate and your wall measurements to your supplier or installer.

Example: one room with a doorway

Consider a 12 × 10 ft rectangular room. Its total wall perimeter is 2 × (12 + 10) = 44 linear ft. If the baseboard does not run across a 3 ft door opening, the first-pass trim length is 41 ft. Use a hypothetical 4% cutting allowance: 41 × 1.04 = 42.64 ft.

With 8 ft stock boards, 42.64 ÷ 8 = 5.33, rounded upward to six boards as a rough minimum. Six boards supply 48 ft of raw length. This is not an optimized cutting plan: a project with many short corner segments may need more boards because an offcut from one wall cannot always be used on another.

Doorway and corner checklist

Feature

Measure or plan

Standard doorway

Exclude the actual opening where no baseboard will run

Closet

Count it if baseboard will be installed inside

Outside corner

Allow for miter cuts and any corner blocks

Uneven walls

Check actual wall runs rather than the room’s apparent floor width

Do stock board lengths work with the room?

Compare a simple total-footage estimate with a wall-by-wall cut list. The lengths of available boards (for example 8, 12 or 16 ft) affect joints, handling and offcuts. Six 8-ft pieces may theoretically cover 42.64 ft, but there is no guarantee the required wall segments can be cut from them with acceptable joints. Also check baseboard profiles and the amount of existing trim that can be reused.

What should you estimate separately?

Door casing, crown molding, shoe molding and caulk are not automatically included in baseboard linear feet. If you intend to seal the finished trim, estimate the joint length with the Caulk Tube Calculator or read how bead dimensions affect yield.

Enter perimeter, openings and board lengths in the Baseboard Calculator, then review your wall-by-wall cutting plan before buying.

MaterialRaft provides planning estimates, not guaranteed installation quantities.
