You may buy more than that because offcuts, damage, direction changes and pattern matching consume material. The allowance is a decision about buying quantity, not a change in the physical size of the room.

Use an example, not a universal rule

For a 200 sq ft project with 8% extra, the adjusted purchasing area is 216 sq ft. For 12% extra it is 224 sq ft. Those numbers describe the cost of different assumptions; they do not prove which is appropriate for your installation.

What increases waste

Diagonal tile patterns, narrow spaces, repeated transitions, irregular corners, small closets, stair details and complex border patterns often produce offcuts. Large continuous rectangles in simple layouts can be more efficient. Material dimensions and installer technique also matter.

Packaging creates a second rounding step

If the material comes in 18 sq ft cartons, 216 ÷ 18 is exactly twelve cartons, while 224 ÷ 18 requires thirteen. So a small difference in percentage can change the buying quantity by a whole box. Verify the coverage on your specific packaging.

Keep spare material thoughtfully

Some homeowners keep a spare carton for later repairs, especially if color lots or product styles might change. This is different from the waste allowance used to complete installation. Record whether the planned extras are for cuts or future maintenance.

Calculate, then verify

Use the Vinyl Plank Calculator or Laminate Calculator with different allowances. Follow the manufacturer’s installation guidance and confirm the quantity with your installer before ordering.

Compare three allowances on the same floor

A net flooring area of 145 sq ft does not change when you choose a different material allowance. The purchasing estimate does. If a product contains 20 sq ft per carton, here is what the final whole-box calculation looks like:

Allowance

Adjusted area

Whole cartons

5%

152.25 sq ft

8

10%

159.50 sq ft

8

15%

166.75 sq ft

9

This explains why a larger allowance does not always increase the number of boxes, but it can abruptly add one at a carton threshold. Also, eight cartons mean 160 sq ft of packaged coverage, not necessarily 160 sq ft of usable installed material after cuts.

Build the allowance from the layout

Look for long straight runs, doorways, diagonal changes, alcoves, herringbone patterns and the ratio of narrow offcuts to full planks. Avoid carrying a fixed percentage across every room. Pergo’s flooring quantity guidance discusses how room shape and corners affect wastage and uses illustrative percentages; these are examples for planning, not universal figures.

Offcuts and spare stock are different

Cutting waste is material consumed while fitting the original installation. Spare stock is extra material you decide to store for future repairs. If you buy a dedicated spare carton, show it as a separate line in the shopping list rather than quietly increasing the waste percentage. Record the product identity and batch before storing it.

Which step gets rounded?

Measure the net area that will receive flooring.

Multiply by 1 + your chosen allowance rate.

Divide by the carton coverage printed on the label.

Round the number of cartons up to the next whole number.

Compare live outcomes in our Vinyl Plank and Laminate calculators.
