These can differ because of cutting allowances and the packaging sold by the manufacturer.

Worked example with 12 × 24 inch tiles

A nominal 12 × 24 in tile covers (12 × 24) ÷ 144 = 2 sq ft before accounting for grout joints. For a net area of 116 sq ft with 10% extra, the adjusted area is 127.6 sq ft. Divide by 2: 63.8 nominal pieces, rounded up to 64 pieces.

Why boxes may contain more

If the actual product has 8 tiles per carton, 64 ÷ 8 = 8 cartons. Those cartons contain 64 tiles. If the calculation yielded 65 tiles, the purchase would round up to nine cartons, which contain 72 pieces. The additional seven tiles arise from whole-carton packaging.

Nominal size differs from real layout

Actual tile dimensions may differ slightly from their nominal dimensions. Grout joint width and staggered patterns influence layout, and a simple area estimator does not determine the precise shapes of cuts. Use manufacturer packaging for pieces per box and check the actual layout with the installer.

Don’t ignore batch variations

For visible finishes, check whether the supplier can provide tiles from compatible shade and caliber lots. Retain box labels if you will need replacement material in the future.

Try the full calculation

The Tile Calculator displays minimum individual tiles, tiles included in the purchased boxes and estimated extra pieces. Use those as separate numbers when discussing your order.

Two examples that show why a single tile changes the box count

Use nominal 12 × 24 inch tiles in these examples. One tile represents (12 × 24) ÷ 144 = 2 sq ft. The assumption is eight pieces per sealed box; always check your actual packaging.

Net area

With 10% allowance

Whole tiles

Eight-tile boxes

116 sq ft

127.6 sq ft

64

8

120 sq ft

132 sq ft

66

9

Although the two rooms differ by only four square feet, the second estimate needs an extra carton because 66 pieces cannot fit into eight boxes. Eight boxes contain 64 tiles; nine contain 72. Box rounding is a separate step from rounding individual tile pieces.

Pieces per box versus coverage per box

Some suppliers label boxes by pieces, while others emphasize coverage in square feet. If a box states 15.8 sq ft of saleable coverage, calculate adjusted area ÷ 15.8 and round up; do not substitute a generic tile size. A printed nominal size may differ slightly from a tile’s actual face dimensions. Verify the brand’s coverage and any stated allowances before treating the box as interchangeable with another.

Check the cartons before paying

Confirm coverage or piece count on the exact product you will purchase.

Compare the batch, shade and caliber codes on every carton. Those codes can affect both appearance and grout-joint consistency.

Ask whether unopened spare cartons may be returned. Future replacements can be difficult to match.

Marazzi explains why shade and caliber information matters for finished tile floors. For a wall rather than a floor, see our backsplash measuring example. Follow our step-by-step guide to calculating tile boxes to convert measured area into whole cartons. When planning a tiled floor, estimate joint-fill material separately using our 12×24 tile grout guide; carton counts do not determine grout quantity.

Planning estimates only; confirm actual product yield, measurements and installation requirements.

Compare individual tile quantities with whole-box purchases and understand why ordering can leave extra tiles.

[4
14,8,13
post-19","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-tile-grout","tag-product-coverage","tag-tile-calculations","tag-waste-allowance
["GET
