Laminate flooring is often sold by full cartons. The carton may state total square feet, the number of planks and their sizes. Coverage per carton is the most direct input for a purchase estimate.
Measure net area
Suppose a living area measures 15 × 12 ft, which is 180 sq ft. A 4 × 5 ft adjacent nook adds 20 sq ft without overlap. The total net coverage area is 200 sq ft. If a fixed uncovered object exists, subtract it only if flooring will not run beneath it.
Make a clear waste assumption
As an illustration, 10% extra gives 200 × 1.10 = 220 sq ft. Do not assume 10% is universal. Pattern, plank lengths, room geometry and installation direction can all alter wastage.
Round up boxes
If the chosen laminate covers 19.6 sq ft per carton, then 220 ÷ 19.6 = 11.22. You would plan to buy twelve cartons. The nominal covered area purchased is 235.2 sq ft, a little more than the exact planned buying area because cartons are indivisible.
Check related materials
Laminate installations may also require expansion gaps, transition strips, trims and compatible underlayment. These are not captured by the box calculation itself. If the laminate comes with attached pad, check the instructions before separately buying underlayment.
Use a working calculator
Enter dimensions and package coverage in the Laminate Flooring Calculator and inspect the full-box rounding.
Worked calculation with a non-round carton size
Suppose a 14 × 11 ft room measures 154 sq ft. A permanent, unlaid 6 sq ft footprint leaves 148 sq ft to cover. Apply an illustrative 8% allowance: 148 × 1.08 = 159.84 sq ft. If the chosen laminate states 19.6 sq ft per carton, divide 159.84 by 19.6 = 8.155… cartons, which rounds up to nine full cartons.
| Scenario | Required area | Cartons (19.6 sq ft each) |
|---|---|---|
| 5% allowance | 155.4 sq ft | 8 |
| 8% allowance | 159.84 sq ft | 9 |
| 12% allowance | 165.76 sq ft | 9 |
The quantities vary at the box boundary; none of these allowances is automatically correct for your project. For a complex pattern or a lot of short end cuts, ask the installer to review the cutting plan rather than relying on a blanket percentage.
Prepare for the installation separately
Laminate is not simply a replacement for carpet by area. Manufacturers may require acclimatization, specific subfloor flatness, expansion spaces and compatible underlayment. For example, Pergo’s preparation guidance describes conditioning its laminate to the room and examining the subfloor. Follow the exact product instructions instead of applying one brand’s specifications to another.
A short ordering checklist
- Read the per-carton area on the product you actually selected.
- Keep flooring box counts separate from underlayment roll counts.
- Measure closet floors and transition areas that will really be installed.
- Confirm whether left-over unopened cartons can be returned and whether spare planks are desirable.
Calculate full boxes using the Laminate Calculator. If separate underlayment is required, estimate it with our underlayment roll guide.
