How the laminate flooring calculator: planks, boxes & underlay works
The calculator multiplies length by width for each room and subtracts excluded square footage or square metres. It adds your selected allowance, then divides the adjusted area by the nominal area of one plank. Round up to whole planks, then round again to complete boxes using the manufacturer's plank count per box.
For a 12 × 10 foot room with 10% waste, you plan for 132 square feet. A plank 7.5 × 48 inches covers 2.5 square feet, so the estimated requirement is 53 planks. If the box contains 8 planks, you would purchase 7 boxes containing 56 planks. Packaging coverage is more reliable than nominal dimensions if the manufacturer provides it.
Underlayment rolls are calculated separately: net floor area multiplied by the underlayment overlap allowance, divided by the stated coverage per roll, then rounded up. Some laminate includes attached padding, and additional underlayment may be unsuitable for the product. Confirm the installation system first.
Frequently asked questions
What about expansion gaps?
Maintain the manufacturer's required gap. It does not remove the need for a planning allowance for offcuts.
Does underlayment coverage include overlap?
Use the roll's stated effective coverage and adjust the overlap allowance to match the product instructions. Avoid double-counting any overlap already factored into stated coverage.
Final quantities depend on your actual product, site conditions, installation method and manufacturer documentation. Always verify before purchasing.
