How the grout calculator: tile joint quantity, bags & cost works
The calculator first sums the net tiled areas of your rectangular rooms. It then approximates the total joint cross-section for a repeating rectangular tile grid. For tile length L and width W (in mm), joint width J (mm), and filled depth D (mm), the indicative joint volume is ((L + W) ÷ (L × W)) × J × D litres per m². Multiply by net area in m², then by an adjustable grout density in kg per litre and a waste factor. Round the resulting weight up to complete bags.
For example, 300 × 600 mm tiles with 3 mm wide and 8 mm deep filled joints require approximately 0.12 litres per m². At a planning density of 1.6 kg/L that is about 0.192 kg/m² before waste. For 20 m² and 10% extra, the estimate is about 4.22 kg, or one 5 kg bag.
This simplified grid estimate excludes variations due to joint geometry, tile thickness, actual fill depth, porous tiles and product formulation. Grout packaging often provides a consumption calculator or chart that should take precedence over this approximation.
Frequently asked questions
Does grout density matter?
Yes. Converting joint volume to weight depends on the chosen grout product and how it is measured. Replace the example density with verified data where possible.
Does it calculate grout for mosaic tile?
It can estimate small rectangular tiles, but unusual profiles or highly irregular mosaic pieces need product-specific consumption data.
Final quantities depend on your actual product, site conditions, installation method and manufacturer documentation. Always verify before purchasing.
