Volume in cubic feet = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (in) ÷ 12. Volume in cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27. Bags = ceiling(cubic feet ÷ bag size in cubic feet).

How the mulch calculator works

Volume in cubic feet = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (in) ÷ 12. Volume in cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27. Bags = ceiling(cubic feet ÷ bag size in cubic feet).

Worked example

A 20 × 8 ft bed at 3 inches deep needs 40 cubic feet, or approximately 1.48 cubic yards. With 2 cu ft bags, buy 20 bags.

Before you order

Irregular bed edges, settling, and uneven existing soil may change the amount required. Keep mulch away from trunks and building siding as recommended locally.
